MA Radio Projects

Here you can find a variety of my favourite pieces of work I produced in my Radio MA at Goldsmiths. Some pieces are produced for Raft Radio our cohort's fictional radio station which had a different demographic each week. You can find more pieces I created here ↓

SPECTRUM | EXPLORING ETHIOPIAN JAZZ

Explore the rich history of Ethiopian Jazz and hear our audience's favourite tracks.

I collaborated with a fellow coursemate to produce an international music show for a 6music type audience.

Together, we developed the idea, wrote the script and gathered voice notes and recommendations from fans of the genre.  While my colleague presented, I took on the role of editing the show.

Despite the challenges of working remotely during the lockdown, we were able to complete the project creatively and collaboratively.

The experience showcased our ability to adapt and excel in any situation. Our successful coursework was a testament to this, with the exception of the final weeks, where we were able to take advantage of studio time for our live news days.

ZOE'S SOUTH LONDON ALLOTMENT

Join Zoë as she shows you around her South London allotment.

For my TV module, I created a video that featured my mother and her experience of gardening in her London allotment. The video was designed in the style of a program like Gardner's World, highlighting the joys of allotment gardening.

Creating this video was a fulfilling experience that rekindled a passion from my past. During my school years, I spent most of my free time making films with friends and studying Media Studies at GCSE and A Level. Revisiting this passion allowed me to bring my creativity and technical skills to this project, and I look forward to applying them to future endeavours.

A CONVERSATION ABOUT LOVE

A patchwork monologue of 13 people's thoughts on love.

Brief: 5 min piece without a narrator.

For my project on love and relationships, I reached out to people on various social media platforms, asking for voice notes to capture their thoughts on the complex and often confusing emotions of falling in love.

Drawing on my skills in qualitative research from my BA in Education Studies, I analysed the hours of audio, identifying key themes and coding them in Adobe Audition and Excel. With this code, I curated a collage of participants' voices, weaving together a monologue that captured the diverse range of perspectives on love and relationships.

YOU'VE OUTGROWN THAT BY FAR

Dive into my mind and hear my memories triggered by songs and events from the outside world.

Listen with headphones for the best experience.

Broadcasted on Radiophrenia.

From a young age, I have been passionate about capturing memories and moments in time, whether that be through writing in a diary, recording conversations with friends, or creating silly films with an old camcorder. When given the freedom to create anything for this 10-minute piece, I decided to use what I had available during the lockdown.

As I sifted through old camcorder tapes, I felt like I was travelling through time, seeing past versions of myself. The experience left me feeling somewhat disoriented, almost as if I should be a smaller, younger version of myself. It was a strange and unique feeling that I wanted to capture in my piece.

My goal was to explore the feeling of being pulled through time and memory triggers and the confusion and liberation that comes with realizing that you are no longer the person in your memories. The resulting 10-minute piece is a reflection on the passage of time and the ways in which memories can shape our perception of ourselves.

JURY OF YOUR PEERS
Edited and co-hosted by Ruby Illing

Ruby Illing and Chris Ahjem go through their listener's moral dilemmas sent through an old courtroom fax machine and deliberate over a sentencing of advice.

(Recorded during lockdown at home)
Original music by Gabriel Hansen

This was a podcast I made with my coursemate.

The original theme tune was created by a friend of mine in music production and includes old fax and dial-up sounds that I sent over to him to go with the 80s courtroom vibe.
